Strap hinges are ornamental in addition to being able to do the job you need. These hinges are available in rough or smooth black iron and really do add to the look of the gate. In the line of Tee hinges, which are also ornamental, there are 20 different styles to choose from. You can try a latch that you have to open and close yourself.

One thing that you have to be cognizant of when buying hinges and other hardware for gates is that some of the hinges do not have the screws needed for installation. You will have to purchase these separately.
